THE OPENING
Lenana House sits at the edge of Bantry Bay, on a private cliff above the Atlantic Seaboard. The building does not impose on the site — it follows it. The architecture steps with the natural fall of the land, the terraces extending outward toward the water, each level lower than the last until the stone meets the air and the ocean opens below.
The structure is concrete, timber, and glass — materials chosen for their honesty and their relationship to the landscape they inhabit. The concrete has the texture of the cliff face it echoes. The timber carries warmth into rooms that might otherwise feel austere. The glass disappears, leaving only the view. On a clear morning in Bantry Bay, this is a considerable thing to leave behind.
The house was designed as a private residence. The proportions reflect that. The ceilings are high. The corridors are wide. The rooms do not feel configured for occupancy – they feel configured for living.
Every surface at Lenana House was chosen with the precision of a house that intended to last. The stone is present throughout — in the walls, the floors, the terraces. It is not decorative. It is structural. It carries the temperature of the day and releases it slowly into the evening. It is the kind of material that looks better after years of use than it does when new. The timber is warm where the stone is cool. Natural materials, allowed to do what natural materials do: age, absorb light, develop character. The finishes are not polished to anonymity. They are allowed to be themselves There is a quality to a well-made house that reveals itself over the course of a stay rather than at the moment of arrival. Lenana House is that kind of house. By the third day, you have started to notice things you did not see on the first.
The study at Lenana House is equipped for guests who need to work and for guests who need the option of working but hope not to. A dedicated workspace, properly set up, with reliable connectivity and a view that makes a long call easier to take. For those who came to disconnect, the room also works in the other direction. A quiet corner of the house with the Atlantic visible through the window. The kind of space where an afternoon can pass without much notice.
These are the rooms that make Lenana House feel like a home rather than a rental. They were not added as amenities. They were part of the design.
